Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) – The Banda Aceh National Narcotics Agency (BNN) revealed that 11 out of 20 street punk teenagers in Banda Aceh City tested positive for using methamphetamine, amphetamines and marijuana.

The punks involved in drug testing were part of a group of teenagers who were randomly intercepted by officers from the Banda Aceh Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) and Wilayatul Hisbah Syariah police during a recent road check.

When met by journalists here, Sunday, the Head of the BNN-Banda Aceh Office, Zahrul Bawadi, said that eight of the 11 punks had consumed crystal methamphetamine, while the other three tested positive for consuming amphetamines and marijuana.

Officers from the Drug Rehabilitation Center in Banda Aceh City have carried out initial checks and coordinated with officers from the Banda Aceh Social Welfare Service, he said.

Bawadi stated that drug tests on teenagers caught during the recent Satpol PP and Wilayatul Hisbah road checks were part of the efforts to prevent drug abuse carried out by BNN.

As previously reported, Aceh is in a state of emergency regarding drug trafficking, and inter-provincial and transnational drug networks are still active in the province despite ongoing crackdowns against them.

Both the police and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) have continued to take firm action against drug kingpins and their drug supply networks in Aceh over the last few years.

Looking at the physical evidence of drug crimes that is often confiscated by the local police and BNN, marijuana and crystal methamphetamine appear to be the most widely trafficked drugs.

Domestic and transnational drug traffickers consider Indonesia as a potential market due to its large population and widespread drug use.

The value of domestic drug trafficking is estimated to reach almost IDR 66 trillion (around US$4.2 billion), with the number of drug trafficking cases continuing to increase.

A joint survey conducted by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) in 2019 estimated the number of drug users in Indonesia at more than 3.4 million.

Surveys conducted in 34 provinces show that around 180 out of 10 thousand Indonesians in the 15 to 64 year age group are drug users.

Users of methamphetamine, narcotics, marijuana and other addictive drugs can come from any social background and socio-economic and cultural background.
