25 of 62 target areas are no longer disadvantaged: ministry

Jakarta (ANTARA) –

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture informed that 25 of the 62 underdeveloped regions in Indonesia that were targeted by the 2020–2024 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) had released their “underdeveloped” status.

Acting Deputy for Coordination of Equal Development and Disaster Management at the Ministry, Sorni Easter Daeli, Monday, said that the 25 regions were spread across Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi and Papua.

“By 2025, these 25 areas will no longer be underdeveloped areas and will be free from the stigma of being underdeveloped areas,” he added.

Daeli informed that the assessment of the status of “underdeveloped areas” is based on data from 2022 to 2023 and the Disadvantaged Regions Index value, which must be above 60 to qualify for a change in status.

“Starting in 2018, these 25 areas have actually shown improvement. “There is even one area whose index value is above 73, namely North Lombok Regency,” he added.

Towards the end of the 2020-2024 RPJMN, it is possible that three to four additional regions will shed the “underdeveloped regions” tag, he said.

“We are still looking at the characteristics based on the calculation of the composite index number, but this has not been determined by the government. “However, the trend shows positive developments in these areas,” he added.

Regarding only 25 out of 62 regions that made cuts, Daeli said the government would use these results as an evaluation to help other regions get out of “underdeveloped” status.

“One of the obstacles in achieving this target is infrastructure which has a large point load in the Disadvantaged Regions Index value,” he explained, adding that in several regions such as Papua, the government is still continuing to accelerate infrastructure development.

“We are also currently conducting discussions, especially with relevant ministries/institutions regarding this indicator. If we think it is no longer suitable then adjustments need to be made. “Later this indicator will be included in the 2025-2029 RPJMN,” he said.
