Basarnas coordinates with the Indonesian Air Force to add helicopters

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed that it has coordinated with the Indonesian Air Force to bring in a number of helicopters to assist in rescue operations at the mine landslide site in Gorontalo.

As of Tuesday, only one police helicopter was supporting the joint rescue team’s rescue efforts, while the number of people affected by a major landslide that flattened an illegal gold mining pit in Tulabolo Village on Sunday (July 7) was recorded at 131.

“Therefore, we are coordinating with the Indonesian Air Force regarding the need for additional helicopters to support rescue operations,” said Basarnas Chief Kusworo, while emphasizing that the additional helicopters were urgently needed to speed up the evacuation process.

As of Tuesday evening, 23 of the 131 people affected by the landslide were confirmed dead, 35 were still missing, and 73 were found alive with injuries, according to Basarnas.

Kusworo himself directly monitored the search operation from the SAR post in Tulabolo Timur Village, Suwawa Timur District, Bone Bolango Regency, together with the Operational Director of the National SAR Agency, Edy Prakoso.

He said the rescue team that left from the post had to walk about 23.7 kilometers to reach the mine hole in the remote area.

Therefore, Kusworo believes deploying additional helicopters is the only approach to speed up evacuation efforts.

Meanwhile, Basarnas Operations Director Edy Prakoso previously stated that the rescue team continues to search for 35 missing people amid the discovery of landslide victims spread across four different points.

All points are the focus of the SAR team’s search, he said, while emphasizing that the number of landslide victims was “temporary and could change” if there were reports from residents.

Heavy rain poured over several areas of Gorontalo on Saturday (July 6), triggering flash floods and landslides.

Several bridges connecting access roads to gold mining pits, located far from residential areas, collapsed.
