Changsa, China, (ANTARA/Xinhua-AsiaNet)- On the morning of June 15, the “Exhibition of Han and Roman Women’s Cultural Relics Personalized for Beauty” opened at the Hunan Museum. Valuable national cultural relics, such as original unlined clothes made of plain thread with curved fronts, were exhibited for the first time. The exhibition will run until October 7.

Jointly planned by the Hunan Museum and the Roman Cultural Heritage Supervision Administration, the exhibition features more than 200 sets of exhibits from 19 museums, including the Hunan Museum and the Musei Capitolini (Capitoline Museums) in Rome, Italy. The exhibits include bronzes, pottery, gold and silverware, glassware, textiles, jade, and sculptures.

The exhibition focuses on women and the three main areas of their lives – family life, social life and emotional life – presenting colorful narratives of women in Eastern and Western cultures 2,000 years ago. By engaging Eastern and Western cultural heritage in an engaging and meaningful dialogue, the show reveals the cultural characteristics of the unique beauty of women from different cultural backgrounds and their efforts to achieve shared aesthetic values.

An unlined garment of plain yarn with a curved front, shown for the first time, represents the pinnacle of textile technology in the Western Han Dynasty. Weighing 48g, it is the earliest example of a thin and light garment made of plain undyed silk with square holes and silk-decorated cuffs and collars. It was excavated from Tomb One at Mawangdui, or the Tomb of Xinzui, who, according to historical records, was the wife of Li Cang, the Prime Minister of Changsha State in the Western Han. She lived more than 2,200 years ago, and died at the age of about 50.

For the first time, the remains of clothing were also displayed with a pattern that read “live long and be happy”. The clothing relics came from a bamboo box to the west of Mawangdui Tomb 3 which contained “two clothing boxes”. The character for “live long and happy” is the earliest woven specimen of its kind to be found on unearthed silk fabric.

On its first public exhibition was the “Painted Plaster Mural of Perseus and Andromeda”, a Roman treasure from the Capitoline Museums. The director of the Roman Cultural Heritage Supervision Administration told the media, “This half-moon mural, from the second half of the 4th century AD, depicts a mythological story of a hero saving beauty.” The 138 Roman pieces/sets on display are mostly from the Capitoline Museums, all of which are being exhibited in China for the first time.
