Jakarta (ANTARA) – Runners from Kenya dominated the best achievers in the 2024 Jakarta International Marathon (JAKIM), Sunday, with Geoffrey Kiprotich Birgen becoming the men’s champion, and Sheila Jepkosgei Chesang finishing in first place in the women’s place.

Second place in the men’s competition was secured by Kiprop Tonui while Joseph Mwangi Ngare, Kenneth Kiprop Kipkemoi and Bililign Yimer Ali shared third place. Apart from Ali who comes from Ethiopia, all the best male runners are Kenyans.

Meanwhile, the top runners in the women’s marathon were Chesang in first place, Careen Cheptoek Mwetich in second place, and Shauline Chepkirui Koech in third place. All of them are also Kenyans.

JAKIM 2024, which was held in conjunction with the 497th anniversary of the City of Jakarta, was attended by 232 runners, according to Ramon Armando, Corporate Secretary of the state-owned Bank BTN which sponsored the event.

“The total number of foreign runners participating was 232… from 30 different countries around the world,” he said.

Runners from Kenya and Japan dominated foreign runners with 56 and 48 runners respectively, he added.

The race starts at 04.00 WIB from the northwest intersection of the National Monument (Monas) and ends at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Senayan Main Stadium.

JAKIM 2024 is divided into three categories, namely full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), and 10 kilometer run.

Meanwhile, Bank BTN President Director Nixon LP Napitupulu admitted that he was very grateful for the success of holding the 2024 Jakarta International Marathon, and being the main sponsor of the race.

JAKIM 2024 was held to support the development of Jakarta as a sports tourism destination, he said, while hoping that the agenda for the next edition could attract more runners.

“We hope (for JAKIM) to be on par with the London Marathon and New York Marathon which are attended by more than 50,000 participants,” said Napitupulu.
