The main goal is to maintain plant genetic diversity and ensure the availability of seed sources in the future.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing a seed bank program to preserve plant biodiversity in Indonesia.

Deputy for Research and Innovation Infrastructure at BRIN, Iman Hidayat, in his statement in Jakarta, said that a seed bank is a special facility for storing and preserving the seeds of various plants.

“The main goal is to maintain plant genetic diversity and ensure the availability of seed sources in the future,” added Hidayat.

On 10-15 June 2024, BRIN will hold a seed conservation skills workshop at the Eka Karya Bali Scientific Conservation Area.

This training is a collaboration program between BRIN, Arcadia Fund – Royal Botanic Garden Kew, and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Hidayat said there were three important things that needed to be considered regarding the development of seed banks in Indonesia.

First, developing human resources for managing the BRIN national seed bank. Human resource development is carried out through training involving a team of experts from the Millennium Seed Bank of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

“The training methods presented here are in the form of standardization to technical and managerial skills,” said Hidayat.

Second, plant seeds in Indonesia have extraordinary potential as a source of food and health.

Hidayat emphasized the need to anticipate and mitigate saving seeds by storing them in seed banks.

“Third, I hope that through this training awareness will grow to preserve seeds,” he said.

BRIN Seed Bank Scientific Collection Management Coordinator Ade Yusup Yuswandi informed that facilities related to seed banks continue to be improved.

The process of developing a seed bank includes collection, processing, storage, viability testing, and data collection. (INE)
