BRIN outlines plans to develop nuclear power plants in Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) stated that testing and operation of the first commercial nuclear power plant (PLTN) in Indonesia will be carried out in the 2030-2034 period.

“The government has designated nuclear energy as part of new and renewable energy to achieve the target of net zero emissions by 2060,” said Head of the BRIN Nuclear Technology Research Center, Topan Setiadipura, in a statement from his office, Wednesday (19 June).

Setiadipura explained that currently 80 small modular reactor designs are being developed globally, one of which is a thermal power plant and an industrial steam generator with a capacity of 40 megawatts called PeLUIt-40 which is being developed together with BRIN and several national institutions.

He emphasized that national policy provides opportunities for PeLUIt-40 technology to contribute to the energy or electricity sector in Indonesia.

Setiadipura said, in the period 2030 to 2034, especially in 2032, the initial production target of 250 megawatts is an opportunity for small modular reactors to enter the electricity or energy market in Indonesia.

“This will be a key factor in achieving a national energy transition,” he said.

He then highlighted two strategies to realize small modular reactors as the first nuclear power plant technology in Indonesia, the first is collaboration with international vendors to implement small modular reactor technology.

Currently, several small modular reactor vendors are communicating with parties in Indonesia for initial agreements. Some have conducted further techno-economic studies regarding the application of certain small modular reactor technologies, he said.

Moreover, several international vendors have opened offices in Indonesia and are carrying out the development and implementation stages of small modular reactors.

The second strategy is to collaborate to encourage national technological development through strategic cooperation with international parties. One of these national technologies is PeLUIt-40 through co-development and implementation cooperation in Indonesia, he said.

“Both strategies require progressive collaboration between small modular reactor vendors at the global level and energy companies in Indonesia,” said Setiadipura.

PeLUIt-40 was designed by BRIN since 2021 as a continuation of the development of the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan) before joining BRIN. PeLUIt-40 is a gas-cooled ultra-high-temperature reactor.
