Civilians can join UN peacekeeping forces in Gaza: TNI Commander

Jakarta (ANTARA) – TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto highlighted the opportunities available for civil society members who qualify to join the UN peacekeeping force to help victims of the war in Gaza.

“Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs will arrange it,” he told local journalists on the sidelines of his meeting with clerics from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Jakarta, Friday.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi recently stated that Indonesia could send its peacekeeping troops to the Gaza Strip on the grounds that this was permitted under a United Nations (UN) mandate.

For this UN mission, Subiyanto revealed that one of the TNI units that will be deployed to the Palestinian enclave is an engineering battalion, because its personnel can help rebuild destroyed houses and public facilities, such as schools, hospitals and places of worship.

There is no doubt that engineers are needed for reconstruction work, while traumatized war victims in the Gaza Strip, for example, will need trauma specialists and psychologists, he explained.

Thus, civil society members in Indonesia who meet the requirements have the opportunity to be involved in the UN peacekeeping force in the TNI to fill the necessary jobs, he said.

However, Subiyanto did not specify the procedures or requirements that qualified civil society members must fulfill if they want to join the UN peacekeeping force in Gaza.

As previously reported, in an effort to anticipate the need for the deployment of UN peacekeepers in Gaza, the TNI has prepared 1,394 personnel who will carry out tasks such as security, rebuilding public facilities and health services.

Subiyanto also highlighted the TNI’s readiness to distribute further humanitarian supplies to Gaza, including hospital ships, as long as a ceasefire has been implemented and the Indonesian military has received a mandate from the UN.

A new armed conflict erupted between Palestine and Israel following Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel in the early hours of October 7, 2023.

Before the Palestinian liberation fighters’ attack on Israel, Tel Aviv continued to close the Gaza crossing.

In response to the unprecedented surprise attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on Hamas. Since the war began, Israeli armed forces have killed at least 37,266 Palestinian civilians and injured around 85,102 others as of June 15, according to Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera reported that many of those killed in Gaza were women and children. Israel’s aggression has also triggered a humanitarian disaster.
