Makassar (ANTARA) – Acting Governor of South Sulawesi Zudan Arif Fakhrulloh said the Honorary Croatian Consulate, which officially opened in Makassar on Friday (7 June), will open up opportunities for Croatia and South Sulawesi to collaborate in various sectors other than tourism.

“We have many opportunities for cooperation, including in the fields of investment and education,” he said in a press statement received by the South Sulawesi Provincial Government in Jakarta, Saturday.

Fakhrulloh also assessed that the inauguration of the Croatian honorary consulate in Makassar was a new milestone in relations between Croatia and South Sulawesi.

Meanwhile, Croatian Honorary Consul in Makassar Munafri Arifuddin said the Republic of Croatia is a country whose tourism sector contributes more than 70 percent of its income.

He highlighted the similarities in the geographical conditions and coastlines of Croatia and South Sulawesi, adding that the Balkan country had succeeded in managing the tourism sector and hotel industry optimally.

“We are similar in terms of maritime affairs and tourism,” he said.

Arifuddin further underlined that Croatia is unique and different from other European countries, noting that the country recorded around 20 million tourist visits last year despite its population being only around four million.

“It is hoped that this consulate will bring benefits to South Sulawesi. “There are many things we can do, especially tourism, human resources, education and trade,” he concluded.

The Director General of Politics at the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Europe, Petar Mihatov, who was present at the inauguration event, praised the government and people of South Sulawesi for their hospitality.

He also believes that the newly inaugurated consulate will set a precedent for other countries to open consulates in Makassar.

Croatian Ambassador to Indonesia Nebojsa Koharovic, among others, was also present at the inauguration. Related news: Croatia hopes to open the door to CPO exports to the EU: DPR
