Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said the high prevalence of tilapia cultivation in lakes or reservoirs can damage the ecosystem and pollute the water, thereby impacting the quality of the fish harvest.

He said that tilapia cultivation is often carried out in lakes or reservoirs in Indonesia because its market share is high, namely 1.3 tons per year with a domestic absorption rate of 90 percent.

“If we stop cultivating fish in lakes or reservoirs, it will cause a reaction. “Even if left unchecked, it can pollute the environment which will also have an impact on the quality of the fish produced,” he said in Jakarta. Wednesday.

He noted that tilapia also has a high market share abroad. Based on Future Market Insight data, the world market value of tilapia in 2024 is projected to reach US$14.46 billion and increase to US$23.02 billion in 2034.

Trenggono said, to minimize cultivation activities in lakes, his ministry has developed a strategy through the development of pilot projects, one of which is a model for cultivating salinity-tolerant tilapia in Karawang, West Java, on 80 hectares of land.

It is hoped that the success of the tilapia cultivation model will encourage efforts to relocate cultivation activities from lakes and reservoirs to land.

The productivity of the salinity-tolerant tilapia cultivation model reaches 7,020 tons per year or IDR 196.5 billion (around US$11.92 million), assuming a selling price of IDR 28 thousand (around US$1.71) per kilogram. Production is planned to be increased to 10 thousand tons per year.

He continued, salinity-tolerant tilapia cultivation activities in Karawang are supported by environmentally friendly technology. The Ministry has prepared waste water management installations, automatic feeding machines and water quality measuring devices to support the quality of tilapia fish.

The methods and technology used in this agricultural model can be duplicated in various regions in Indonesia.

Regarding this, he is optimistic that relocation will be easier because farmers have a way to continue their business.
