DPR asks Indonesia and Africa to articulate their aspirations

Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA) – House Speaker Puan Maharani invited the parliaments of Indonesia and African countries to loudly voice their aspirations in order to build concrete cooperation that benefits the people. “I invite us to emphasize that parliament will lead the struggle for peace and prosperity in Africa, Indonesia, and the world,” Puan said while opening the opening session of the 2024 Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Forum (IAPF) in Nusa Dua, Bali, Sunday.

He hopes the forum can improve relations between Indonesia and African countries, considering that this improvement can only be achieved if parliament strengthens — not duplicates — cooperation between governments.

“Added value will be achieved if IAPF cooperation helps realize the aspirations of people in Africa and Indonesia for a more peaceful and prosperous life,” he said.

“Given that various global crises have a direct impact on our citizens, parliament must be more active in addressing global issues,” he added.

Maharani stressed that parliaments should promote peace, condemn violence, and prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in resolving international issues — especially in democratic countries where parliaments play a role in shaping policies related to war or peace.

He also stressed that Indonesia and Africa must continue to support the Palestinian struggle for independence, work to end the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, and advocate for peace in conflict-affected areas.

“Similarly, we face a choice: to encourage mutually beneficial cooperation rather than a winner-takes-all approach, and to strengthen multilateralism rather than pursue unilateral policies,” he added.

The IAPF, held in Bali from August 31 to September 2, is themed “Strengthening Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Partnership for Development.”

The event, which will take place in conjunction with the 2nd Indonesia-Africa (IAF) High Level Forum (FTT), will be attended by around 855 participants from various countries.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to attend the event.
