Jakarta (ANTARA) – Former Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Tanri Abeng died at the age of 82 on Sunday at 02.36 WIB.

“He died this morning at 02.00 at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta,” said former Secretary of the Ministry of BUMN, Said Didu, when confirmed by ANTARA here.

The late minister will be buried at the Tanri Abeng University complex, South Jakarta on Sunday afternoon, according to a written announcement at his home.

Until 10.00 WIB, several national figures, including former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Deputy Chairman of the MPR Fadel Muhammad, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and former Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) AM Hendropriyono, had visited the funeral home to pay their last respects to Abeng, and expressed his condolences to his family and relatives.

Deputy Chairman Muhammad admitted that he remembered Abeng as a figure who prioritized education and wanted to improve the state company ecosystem during his time in the cabinet.

“He developed education wherever he was. “I see he often advises us to continue developing human resources,” said Muhammad.

Hendropriyono also remembered that Abeng had a brilliant vision and was advanced in his time. He praised the late minister for his contribution to national development.

“He was one of my best colleagues during our time in the cabinet,” he added.

Apart from that, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir praised his predecessor for playing an important role in Indonesia’s economic development.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of the first BUMN Minister, Mr. Tanri Abeng, a figure who made a great contribution to the nation,” said Thohir via his official Instagram, Sunday.

Tanri Abeng served as the first and only Minister of State for the Utilization of State-Owned Enterprises under President Soeharto’s government in March 1998. His first term of office only lasted two months, following the collapse of the New Order regime in May 1998.

He was reappointed to the same position by President BJ Habibie in May 1998 and served until October 1999.

After ending his term in the cabinet, Abeng served as commissioner in several state companies, such as Telkom, Pertamina and Bio Farma. As a reflection of his commitment to education, the former minister founded Tanri Abeng University in 2011.
