Jakarta (ANTARA) –

A prominent security minister in President Joko Widodo’s government has expressed the Indonesian government’s support for the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) humanitarian mission in Palestine.

The government’s support was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto when he received a courtesy visit from Sarbini Abdul Murad in Jakarta earlier this week.

Murad, a professional doctor, currently serves as chairman of the presidium of MER-C Indonesia.

In a press statement received by the Coordinating Ministry in Jakarta, Tuesday, Tjahjanto said that all MER-C volunteers involved in humanitarian missions in Palestine were “humanitarian heroes”.

For humanitarian missions, the government and all volunteer organizations, including MER-C, need to work together to help those who need assistance in Indonesia and abroad, he added.

MER-C is a non-profit organization in Indonesia that provides medical assistance to victims of natural disasters and war.

Founded by several University of Indonesia (UI) students in 1999. Since then, MER-C volunteers have been actively involved in humanitarian missions inside and outside Indonesia.

MER-C volunteers have also been caring for those who are victims of Israeli brutality in the Gaza Strip since October 7 2023.

Responding to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza due to the destruction of hospitals, MER-C published an open letter to the World Health Organization in December 2023.

In the letter, MER-C urges WHO to do its best to restore the function of hospitals that have been destroyed and occupied by the Israeli military as military barracks so that they can serve Palestinians who need medical services.

A new armed conflict erupted between Palestine and Israel following a surprise attack carried out by Hamas in the early hours of October 7, 2023.

Since the war began, Israeli armed forces have killed at least 36,550 Palestinian civilians and injured an estimated 82,959 others. Al Jazeera he said, citing data as of June 4, 2024.

Al Jazeera reported that many of those killed in Gaza were women and children. Israel’s aggression also triggered a humanitarian disaster.
