Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – The 79th Indonesian Independence Day ceremony on August 17 2024 will be an event to welcome the archipelago as the new national capital, according to Acting Deputy Head of the Archipelago Capital Authority (OIKN), Raja Juli Antoni. This year, Independence Day ceremonies will take place in the archipelago and the country’s current capital, Jakarta.

“This is a transitional ceremony to welcome the new capital city,” said Antoni after attending the 2024 Agrarian Reform Summit agenda in Jakarta, Saturday.

The unusual step taken by holding Independence Day ceremonies in two different cities was carried out to pay tribute to Jakarta, which has been the nation’s capital for decades, for its contribution to national development and progress, he explained.

The ceremony will be led by President Joko Widodo accompanied by President-elect Prabowo Subianto, while the ceremony will be led by Vice President Ma’ruf Amin in Jakarta with Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, he said.

He said that the 80th Indonesian Independence Day ceremony in 2025 would be the first to be held entirely in the new capital.

“God willing, next year the ceremony will be held entirely in Nusantara City,” he said.

President Joko Widodo previously said that the archipelago would be the sole host for the 2025 Independence Day national ceremony following a presidential decision regarding moving the capital.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has taken the necessary steps to make the presidential palace in the archipelago a viable option for the president to stay before or after the Independence Day commemoration, although the head of state has not announced any plans to do so. So.

“We have prepared it (the Palace),” said Head of the Ministry’s Archipelago City Infrastructure Development Task Force, Danis Sumadilaga, Friday.

Sumadilaga added that as of June 6, construction of the main palace building had reached 73 percent.

He informed that overall, the construction of the Presidential Palace Complex was 80 percent complete, and work on the Presidential Office complex was almost 90 percent complete.
