Jakarta (ANTARA) –

Indonesia and Canada have started negotiations on the eighth round of the Indonesia–Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA–CEPA) to discuss 20 negotiation issues.

This round will also feature an expert discussion on state-owned enterprises.

Director General of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, said Indonesia encouraged the heads of discussions on negotiation issues to intensify communication and be pragmatic to speed up the completion of the talks.

“Even though there are still several unresolved issues, we are confident that Indonesia and Canada can reach an agreement that is on target and mutually beneficial,” said Witjaksono, in a written statement released in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The two sides also agreed to hold dialogue on critical minerals amid the talks, which opened in Ottawa, Canada, on Monday.

The discussion reflects a commitment to intensify strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Canada as major producers of important minerals, said the Director General.

“(Dialogue) is proposed to explore the potential of both countries in processing mineral resources and developing new and renewable technologies,” said Witjaksono.

Meanwhile, the Ministry’s Director of Bilateral Negotiations and Deputy Chief Negotiator, Johni Martha, said that Indonesia and Canada have the same commitment to resolving negotiation issues.

Issues expected to be discussed in the current round of negotiations include transparency, anti-corruption, responsible business conduct, temporary movement of people, and excise and trade facilitation, he said.

“We also hope that other negotiation issues will continue to fulfill the commitments contained in the ICA-CEPA Negotiation Acceleration Work Program agreed upon by the two countries,” added Martha.

Based on ministry data, the bilateral trade value between Indonesia and Canada reached US$1.1 billion in January–April 2024. Indonesia’s exports to Canada during that period were recorded at US$466 million, while imports from Canada were worth US$655 million.

Indonesia’s main exports to Canada in 2023 will be telephone equipment, natural rubber and suitcases, while Indonesia’s main imports from Canada will be wheat, fertilizer, soybeans and sawdust.
