Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the peacekeeping mission in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, can only be carried out if there is a UN mandate. “So far the UN has not touched on the discourse of launching peacekeeping operations in Gaza,” said Ministry Spokesperson, Rolliansyah Soemirat, in a short message received in Jakarta, Monday.

He said that countries are currently prioritizing the actual implementation of Resolution 2735 adopted by the UN Security Council in an effort to end hostilities between Israel and the Palestinian resistance force Hamas.

“The number of UN peacekeeping personnel who will be deployed and the expertise required will always be adjusted to real conditions on the ground,” he added.

Previously, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi and Commander of the Indonesian National Army (TNI), General Agus Subiyanto, emphasized Indonesia’s readiness to deploy personnel for prospective UN-approved peacekeeping operations in Gaza.

“Indonesia is ready to send its peacekeeping troops under a UN mandate. “I emphasize, under the UN mandate,” said Marsudi after a meeting with Commission I of the DPR in Jakarta, June 5 2024.

The following day, General Subiyanto announced that his party would prepare four battalions for the Gaza peacekeeping mission if mandated by the UN.

“We will form a brigade consisting of a Support Battalion, Engineer Battalion, Health Battalion and Supply Battalion,” he said after attending a meeting with the legislative commission.

Both statements were made in response to a similar statement made by Defense Minister Prabowo at the IISS Shangri-La 2024 Dialogue which was held in Singapore on June 1.

“We are ready to delegate peacekeeping troops to guard and monitor the prospective ceasefire and provide protection and security to all parties and parties,” he said.

On this occasion, he also emphasized the importance of pursuing inclusive dialogue and implementing a two-state solution to achieve peace.

“The two-state solution is the only viable option for Israel and Palestine to achieve lasting peace and security,” said Prabowo, who will replace President Joko Widodo for the 2024-2029 presidential term.
