The Minister then emphasized that access to drinking water and adequate sanitation is a fundamental human right and that everyone on the planet should have equal access to these resources.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia highlighted the importance of taking collaborative action to realize water security at the global level at the Third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development”.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono underlined that President Joko Widodo at the 10th World Water Forum held recently in Bali stated that comprehensive collaboration is very important to make water an instrument for achieving shared prosperity.

“Collaboration like this is the key to water conservation for shared prosperity in the future,” he said at a conference held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, as quoted from information received in Jakarta, Wednesday.

He then highlighted Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which mandates countries to realize equitable access to clean water and safe sanitation by 2030.

However, he said that a relevant UN report released in 2022 shows that only 73 percent of the global population has access to adequate drinking water services, while basic sanitation is enjoyed by only 57 percent of the population.

“By 2023, Indonesia has succeeded in providing access to drinking water to 92 percent of its population and basic sanitation services to 86 percent of its population. However, it is true that we still have a lot to do to achieve Goal 6 by 2030, said Hadimuljono.

The Minister then emphasized that access to drinking water and adequate sanitation is a fundamental human right and that everyone on the planet should have equal access to these resources.

He then encouraged all international conference participants to work together to take real, transformative action in an effort to realize global water security while still upholding the principles of sustainability, equality and social justice.

“This forum can provide an opportunity for us to exchange experiences and stimulate increased global collaboration,” he concluded.
