Indonesia encourages 100 percent stunting screening

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy asked integrated health posts (posyandu) to collaborate to achieve the target of 100 percent weight and body measurement coverage by the end of June.

This encouragement is part of the government’s efforts to accelerate the handling of stunting in children in the country.

“The achievement is still around 50 percent, even though there are only nine days left,” said Effendy after attending a coordination meeting to accelerate stunting reduction in Jakarta, Friday.

According to the Ministry of Health, not all posyandu units have anthropometric equipment.

To overcome this problem, Effendy asked for coordination and collaboration between units that have equipment and units that lack it.

He explained that the schedule for carrying out measurements varies between posyandu units. Therefore, anthropometric equipment can be used interchangeably.

The Minister emphasized that the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) is tasked with carrying out body measurement and weighing activities in the field.

However, he also asked for help from all stakeholders, including the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the Indonesian National Army (TNI).

The TNI and Polri agreed to help posyandu in remote areas, he said.

He also urged the BKKBN, Ministry of Health and local governments to coordinate with each other to provide accurate data about posyandu that have not carried out body measurements and interventions simultaneously.

Director General of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, Maria Endang Sumiwi, explained that simultaneous body measurements in all 301,000 posyandu units were targeting prospective brides and grooms, pregnant women and toddlers.

“Nutritional status is measured so that we get information about the nutritional status of targets which is the key to reducing stunting in Indonesia,” he said.

He underlined that by June 2024, the government is pursuing a target of 100 percent coverage for pregnant women, brides-to-be and toddlers.

Reducing stunting is a priority program for the Indonesian government which seeks to reduce the prevalence of stunting to 14 percent by 2024.
