Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Environment and Forestry stated that Indonesia has so far succeeded in restoring 5.5 million hectares of peatland.

“In the last 10 years, we have succeeded in breaking the myth that peatlands cannot be restored,” said the Director General of Pollution and Environmental Damage at the Ministry of Agriculture, Sigit Reliantoro, in an online discussion monitored in Jakarta, Wednesday.

At the event discussing peatland management and restoration, he noted that Indonesia had witnessed a number of large forest and land fires, including in 2015 which destroyed 2.6 million hectares of land.

Reliantoro noted that in the last decade, the Indonesian government has implemented a strategy to prevent and restore damaged peatland ecosystems.

Moreover, the government has taken legal action against individuals and corporations proven to be involved in destroying the peat ecosystem in the country.

Until 2023, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has carried out an inventory of 300 peatland hydrological units (KHG), with an area of 15.42 million hectares out of a total of 24.67 million hectares.

“We have also restored the peatland ecosystem, especially hydrologically, in a concession area of 3.9 million hectares spread over 73 industrial plantation forests and 259 oil palm plantations,” he explained.

He further emphasized that the government is also carrying out restoration efforts outside the concession area through the Mandiri Village Cares for Peatland Program which collaborates with 272 villages, with the area of inundated peatland reaching 51 thousand hectares by 2023.

He also highlighted that the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) had reported that 1.6 million hectares of peatland had been restored by 2023.

“So in total, if you add 1.6 million hectares, then there are 5.5 million hectares of peatland ecosystem that have been restored. Therefore, once again, in the last 10 years, we have succeeded in refuting the myth that peatland ecosystems cannot be restored. ,” he commented.
