Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) –

The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment underscored Indonesia’s optimism to reduce plastic waste in the sea by up to 70 percent.

“Indonesia’s target is to be able to reduce plastic waste in the sea by 2025,” said Acting Deputy for Maritime Human Resources Coordination at the Ministry of Aniza in Jakarta, Tuesday.

He noted that the target was relatively large and ambitious. However, the government, especially related institutions, must be confident in setting higher targets to protect underwater ecosystems from the threat of plastic waste pollution.

Based on data obtained by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, in 2023, around 12.87 million tons of plastic waste will be scattered in Indonesian waters.

The government has implemented several policies to overcome this, including the “Indonesia Mission 2024.” One of the policies focuses on studying waste and microplastics in Indonesian seas.

In a series of studies conducted by the global marine exploration non-profit organization OceanX together with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Indonesia, researchers found plastic waste at certain depths but not as much as in other countries.

Apart from that, in the framework of the Indonesia Mission 2024 which involves foreign researchers, researchers also took water samples to check for microplastics in Indonesian seas.

The results of research on microplastics are considered very important as study material or early warning for the government and the wider community to protect the oceans from waste pollution.

Microplastics are said to pollute the sea and related ecosystems. If fish eat microplastics and are consumed by the public, it can pose a threat to public health.

After all series of research stages are completed, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the research team will announce the results and hold a seminar to encourage the public to pay more attention to protecting marine ecosystems.
