Indonesia welcomes the UN Security Council resolution regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution regarding a ceasefire and comprehensive resolution of the conflict in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli aggression since October 2023.

UNSC Resolution 2735 (2024) was adopted on Monday (10 June) with the support of 14 members of the UN Security Council, including the United States, who proposed a three-phase ceasefire scheme in the resolution. Russia abstained from the vote.

“The adoption of UNSC Resolution 2735 (2024) regarding the proposed three-phase ceasefire is long overdue but is an important step towards stopping ongoing atrocities against the Palestinian people and towards achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” as stated by Indonesia. Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta, Tuesday.

According to a statement on social media platform X observed here, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all parties to reach an agreement without delay to ensure a lasting and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza.

Indonesia expressed hope that the expected ceasefire would ensure the immediate distribution of much-needed humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

The ceasefire is also expected to pave the way for the implementation of a two-state solution to resolve the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansour, stated that the resolution was in line with the aspirations of the Palestinian people who want to see a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Israeli aggression.

He emphasized that the Palestinian people are united in seeing the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution.

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas also supported the resolution and expressed its willingness to cooperate with mediators in negotiations regarding the implementation of the resolution, which they called “consistent with the demands of our people.”

The UNSC resolution was adopted amidst the ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023, which has claimed the lives of more than 36,600 civilians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 83 thousand others.

According to UN data, Israeli aggression has caused 85 percent of Gaza’s residents to flee, destroyed more than 60 percent of infrastructure in Gaza, and caused shortages of food, clean water and medicine.
