Indonesian and Australian Defense Ministers to sign DCA in Central Java

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and his Australian counterpart Richard Marles will sign a defense cooperation agreement (DCA) at the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Academy, Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday.

When contacted from Jakarta, the Head of the Public Relations Bureau of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, Edwin Adrian Sumantha, stated that the signing would be witnessed by senior officials from the defense ministries and armed forces of both countries.

“The signing of the Indonesia-Australia DCA is the result of defense cooperation that has been established since 1967. Both countries believe that the DCA will facilitate cooperation in anticipating potential security threats in the Asia Pacific region,” he said.

Sumantha further explained that DCA will also function as a legal instrument to complement existing agreements.

He said the two countries shared the same view on the need to take their defense cooperation to the next level, given that they had witnessed increasingly intensive cooperation between their military institutions in the last decade, particularly in the areas of education and training.

The official elaborated on the military ties, saying the TNI had sent its cadets to study at the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College at Duntroon.

Furthermore, he said, Indonesia and Australia have begun to contemplate the establishment of a joint peacekeeping mission under the United Nations peacekeeping force.

“In addition, both countries have witnessed an increase in their military strength in joint exercises,” he added.

The Indonesia-Australia DCA negotiations took place alternately in Jakarta and Canberra in May, August and December last year, with a conclusion reached recently on 20 August 2024.

Minister Prabowo, who will take office as president in October, announced the end of the round of talks during his meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at Parliament House in Canberra.

On that occasion, PM Albanese dubbed the DCA as a historic agreement and expressed optimism about the legal instrument that paves the way for stronger bilateral defense cooperation that is expected to help maintain stability in the region.
