Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque received a total of 62 sacrificial animals consisting of 50 cows and 12 goats for sacrifice for Eid al-Adha this year.

“The slaughter of sacrificial animals will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7 am local time,” said the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, Nasaruddin Umar, in Jakarta, Monday.

He noted that the animals received were donations from President Joko Widodo, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, Fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, and Solo Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

President Widodo donated a cow weighing 1,192 kilograms, while Vice President Amin donated a cow weighing 1,164 kilograms.

Apart from that, Umar noted, the mosque had also received sacrificial animals from non-Muslim residents, including representatives of the Cathedral Church, Hotel Borobudur, and the Chinese community.

“This is proof of religious tolerance in Indonesia,” he stressed.

The high priest said that his party had preferred to proactively distribute sacrificial meat directly to those who were entitled to it in the last four years, so that there was no longer the need to queue at the mosque.

Apart from delivering meat, he highlighted that the Istiqlal Mosque has also provided institutions such as Islamic boarding schools with a budget to purchase sacrificial animals independently.

He then said that the Istiqlal Mosque always upholds environmental cleanliness when offering sacrifices. Apart from that, mosques also always store the blood and feces of sacrificial animals in special tanks.

The blood and waste that is stored will then be handed over to parties who can be recycled into environmentally friendly alternative fuel, he said.

After performing Eid al-Adha prayers at the mosque, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin handed over the sacrificial cow that he and President Widodo had donated to Grand Imam Umar.

“It has become a tradition for the president and vice president to slaughter sacrificial animals in several places, especially the Istiqlal Mosque, which this year received quite a lot of cows and goats,” he said.

On this occasion, he invited more Muslims to strengthen their relationship with God Almighty by donating sacrificial animals whose meat would be distributed to those in need, as exemplified by the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham).
