Yogyakarta (ANTARA) – The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture held a focus group discussion (FGD) on “The Role of Museums in Education, Research, and Character Development” to strengthen coordination of museum management.

This FGD was held by the Ministry of Museums in collaboration with the Yogyakarta Exploration Community on Wednesday, in order to strengthen coordination, synchronization, and monitoring between stakeholders in museum management.

Deputy for Coordination of Mental Revolution, Cultural Advancement, and Sports Achievement of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Warsito emphasized the need for stronger synergy between stakeholders involved in developing the nation’s cultural values, identity, character, self-esteem, and national pride.

“Because, the museum with its various collections contains all the character values (of the nation), namely religious, nationalist, mutual cooperation, integrity, and independence,” he said.

In addition to storing objects for exhibition, museums function as centers for research, education, and cultural advancement.

Warsito advised museum managers to always be innovative and adaptive to developments in science and technology.

He also expressed optimism that local governments would help expand the role of museums in educating students.

Meanwhile, Wiendu Nuryanti, who served as Deputy Minister of Education and Culture for the 2011-2014 period, stated that museums are the most appropriate place to find sources of historical information and study history.

“There are many objects that can be used as learning media in museums. They are useful as a means of increasing public understanding, especially students, of historical events,” he said.

Nuryanti emphasized the need for support from all related parties, such as the Indonesian Museum Association (AMI), the Regional Museum Association (AMIDA), and other community components to advance museums in the country.
