Opportunities for internships abroad are wide open: Minister of Manpower

Mojokerto, East Java (ANTARA) –

Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah said that the potential for overseas internships for Indonesian people is wide open considering the labor shortage that occurs in many countries.

“In 2023, there will be 270 thousand internship placements abroad, meaning the contribution of overseas placements is quite high,” he said during public education activities about internships abroad and the soft launching of vocational high schools in Jakarta, Saturday.

According to him, his party is following up on the Job Creation Law by opening more job opportunities and attracting new investment, both from within and outside the country.

“Currently we are experiencing an abundance of productive age population, while many countries are experiencing a labor shortage,” he said.

He added that several countries experiencing labor shortages include Japan, South Korea and several countries in Europe.

“Even though Indonesia has a large population of productive age, on the other hand, many countries need more workers, meaning job opportunities not only within the country but also abroad,” he said.

Therefore, many companies in the world still lack skilled experts, he said.

Meanwhile, he said new investment was flowing into Indonesia as the government intensively intensified its downstream program.

“This requires a large workforce and many experts every year,” he said.

There are some challenges, for example in terms of the output of vocational education institutions, or perhaps the skills learned do not meet the needs of the job market, he added.

“According to data, vocational school graduates contribute 18 percent to the open unemployment rate. “This means that the skills and competencies of the workforce do not match job market demand,” he said.
