Badung, Bali (ANTARA) – Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno believes that Pope Francis’ visit to Indonesia will bring peace and ease geopolitical tensions, thus having a positive impact on tourism and the national economy.

On the sidelines of the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum and High-Level Forum on Multistakeholder Partnership in Badung, Bali, on Tuesday, Uno said that Indonesia was very proud to have the opportunity to receive the Pope on his apostolic journey in the Asia-Pacific.

After ending his visit to Indonesia on September 6, 2024, the Catholic Church leader will continue his visit to Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore.

“Not only Catholics, the entire Indonesian nation is very happy (about this visit). This is a historic visit,” he said.

The Foreign Minister believes that the visit of the Vatican leader will further boost Indonesia’s image as a tourist destination blessed with harmony between religious communities.

He also pointed out that Indonesia has various places that offer religious tourism experiences, such as Flores in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

“Hopefully, His Holiness the Pope’s visit to Indonesia can strengthen the harmony and religious tolerance that this nation has fostered so far. This (visit) is an honor for us,” he said.

Pope Francis landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten, at 11.25 local time on Tuesday before heading to Jakarta.

He is scheduled to meet President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The following day, the Holy See leader will participate in an interfaith dialogue at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, before greeting beneficiaries of charitable organizations at the Office of the Indonesian Bishops’ Conference (KWI).

On the same day, he will lead a mass at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium complex, which will be attended by thousands of Catholics. He will depart for Papua New Guinea on September 6.
