PPATK blocked 5,000 bank accounts linked to online gambling

The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) has blocked five thousand bank accounts, both individuals and groups, related to online gambling cases.

PPATK Public Relations Group Coordinator Natsir Kongah, Saturday, said that his party could not confirm the exact value of the transactions carried out through the bank account.

“To date, we have blocked five thousand accounts… the accumulation since the Head (PPATK) said that in the first quarter of 2024 has reached IDR 600 trillion (around US$36.39 billion),” he said in an online press conference. discussion about the impact of online gambling.

Funds from these bank accounts mostly flowed to ASEAN countries, such as Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia.

He further revealed that around 80 percent of the 3.2 million online gambling players identified so far bet more than IDR 100 thousand (around US$ 6.07) on average.

The profiles of those who play online gambling vary from students, university students, even housewives.

“For example, if your family’s income is IDR 200 thousand (around US$12.13) per day, if you use IDR 100 thousand for online gambling, then the family’s nutritional needs will be reduced significantly,” he said.

Reports regarding online gambling constitute the largest share of suspicious financial transaction reports received by PPATK, namely 32.1 percent, followed by fraud (25.7 percent) and other criminal acts (12.3 percent), while complaints related to corruption account for 7 percent.

On June 14 2024, the Indonesian government issued a presidential decree regarding the formation of a task force to eradicate online gambling chaired by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto.

This task force was formed to tackle online gambling because it is not only illegal, but can also cause financial losses and cause social and psychological disorders that can lead to crime.
