Precautions are the Key to Successful Management of Dengue Dengue in Children: Ministry

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Parental vigilance is the key to successful treatment of dengue fever in children, according to the Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Imran Pambudi.

He added that parents need to understand the changes in their children’s bodies so that when dengue fever gets worse, they can receive medical treatment and death from dengue fever can be prevented.

“Parents must really understand their children, sometimes they cannot express what they feel. In fact, in diagnosing, doctors often only rely on anamnesis. “Through interviews, diseases can be identified without laboratory results,” he explained in a discussion event in Jakarta, Sunday.

Based on ministry data, as of May 2024, from 2022 to 2024, the highest number of dengue fever cases was in the 15-44 year age group, namely 43 percent of the total cases.

Meanwhile, in terms of mortality rates, the highest death rate due to dengue fever in the last seven years occurred in children aged 5-14 years, namely 53 percent.

Pambudi stated that cases of child deaths due to dengue fever were caused by children’s immunity which was not as good as that of people of productive age.

Apart from that, symptoms of worsening dengue fever conditions are difficult to detect in children because they cannot describe the symptoms they are feeling. Therefore, children are often the target of treatment when their condition is critical.

For this reason, parents are encouraged to communicate intensively with their children regarding the changes they feel in their bodies.

Some symptoms that can be a sign for parents that their child’s condition is getting worse include the condition not getting better after the body temperature decreases, the child continuing to refuse to eat and drink, severe stomach ache, and lethargy.
