President Jokowi urged the need for further research into the benefits of kratom

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo instructed the Ministry of Health, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and the National Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) to continue research on the benefits of the kratom plant (Mitragyna speciosa).

“The President emphasized optimizing (research) the benefits of the kratom plant,” said Head of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Moeldoko after attending a closed meeting regarding the legalization of kratom at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Thursday.

Moeldoko emphasized that in the meeting the discussion centered on the Ministry of Health’s findings which concluded that kratom was not a dangerous narcotic substance and could be used as a pain reliever.

However, the government has decided to wait for the conclusions of related research carried out by BRIN, which is expected to be next August, he said.

The KSP chairman explained that the government was also discussing trade and management regulations for kratom to address public complaints, especially from around 18 thousand families in West Kalimantan who had difficulty exporting the kratom plants they produced due to the lack of product standardization.

Residents in Kalimantan have long used kratom as a stimulant whose effects are comparable to coffee consumption. He stated that consuming kratom has a low risk of addiction.

“Management and trade need to be regulated so that kratom is no longer contaminated with unhealthy substances, (such as) salmonella, E. coli and heavy metals,” stressed Moeldoko.

“(Kratom exports) have decreased because our standards are not there (which) causes our products to be rejected and the price to fall,” he said.

Based on data from the Ministry of Trade, Indonesia exported most of its kratom to the United States in the January-May 2023 period with an export value of US$4.86 million.

Indonesia also exports its kratom to Germany, India and the Czech Republic.

Kratom leaves are known to contain active ingredients, namely the alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These two active ingredients have an analgesic or pain relieving effect.

The active compound mitragynine contained in kratom has the potential to cause addiction, similar to narcotics. Consuming kratom causes feelings of relaxation and comfort as well as excessive euphoria if consumed in high doses.

Widely planted in the Kalimantan region, kratom leaves are usually used to make tea or processed into supplements that are useful in reducing pain, improving skin health and increasing libido.

BNN stated that the use of kratom has not been regulated in the Narcotics Law so that regional government regulations cannot limit its use.
