An inclusive and efficient transportation system can be a catalyst for driving economic growth, reducing social inequality, and even strengthening a country’s ecological foundation.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Public transportation is not limited to moving people from one place to another, but is a reflection of a country’s social and economic values, said National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) researcher, Badrun Susantyo.

“An inclusive and efficient transportation system can be a catalyst for encouraging economic growth, reducing social disparities, and even strengthening a country’s ecological foundation,” he added in Jakarta, Tuesday.

He said that humane transportation policies and systems need to be built to meet the basic human need for accessibility.

According to him, Indonesia’s geographical conditions pose challenges to public transportation.

Therefore, he said, it is necessary to design and implement solutions that are integrated and accessible to all levels of society to answer these challenges.

“One of the main challenges we face is the development of equitable transportation infrastructure. “This is a very difficult challenge for our country,” he said.

He also highlighted the inadequate transportation infrastructure in remote areas.

“In remote areas, the existing transportation infrastructure is still far from adequate. “This has a direct impact on community accessibility,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Jabodetabek Transportation Management Agency, Ministry of Transportation, stated that in 2020–2024 it will focus on several strategic targets, namely basic service infrastructure, economic infrastructure and urban infrastructure.

The Agency’s Director, Zamrides, said that infrastructure development policies focus on strengthening land transportation connectivity, starting from road and network development, service management, to regional planning.

This policy also aims to increase the integration of transportation modes through physical, institutional, schedule, payment integration, as well as service and system integration.

Sustainable transportation includes economic, social and environmental aspects which will have an impact on the feasibility of public transportation services as the backbone of community mobility, he said.
