Sacrificial meat from Indonesian Hajj pilgrims to fight childhood stunting

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Chief Minister of President Joko Widodo’s government revealed that the meat of sacrificial animals sacrificed by Indonesian pilgrims in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during the Eid al-Adha celebration some time ago, will be sent to Indonesia to combat stunting in childhood.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy stated that the company from Saudi Arabia would process sacrificial meat into canned meat and ready-to-eat food products before sending it to Indonesia.

“After being sent to Indonesia, the sacrificial meat products will then be distributed to families who need them and meet the requirements for stunting prevention efforts carried out by the government,” he told reporters here, Wednesday.

“Hopefully this sacrificial meat program will be a good step for us to prevent stunting in our children,” said Muhadjir.

For this reason, he plans to visit Saudi Arabia on July 3 2024 to inspect companies collaborating with the Indonesian government in processing canned and ready-to-eat food products, he said.

The ministry is also coordinating with the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) and the National Zakat Agency (Baznas), whose personnel teams are still in Saudi Arabia, he said.

However, Muhadjir admitted that he did not yet know the total number of products that would be sent to Indonesia because it depended on the company’s production capacity.

Regarding stunting, the World Health Organization (WHO) has defined children with stunted growth as those whose “height for age is more than two standard deviations below the median of the WHO Child Growth Standards.”

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) previously emphasized that the government continues to strive to reduce the prevalence of stunting, from 37 percent to 14 percent this year.

“Our target is to reduce the prevalence of stunting from 37 percent to 14 percent. This is very ambitious. “But we have to work hard to achieve this target,” said President Jokowi recently.

Currently, stunting in children often occurs in several provinces, including East Nusa Tenggara and East Java.
