Mecca, Saudi Arabia (ANTARA) – Saudi Arabian authorities have detained an Indonesian social media influencer for allegedly promoting and offering illegal Hajj visas, according to the Indonesian Consul General in Jidda, Yusron Ambary.

“The person concerned has been detained by security officers,” said Yusron in Jakarta, Friday (7/6).

He revealed that several congregations had already used the services provided by the influencer. Based on initial findings, the pilgrims are suspected of going on Hajj with non-hajj visit visas issued by the suspect.

The consul general is investigating the whereabouts of the pilgrims, who could also be arrested if they are found performing the Hajj without a Hajj visa by Saudi authorities, the consul general said.

Yusron said Saudi authorities were targeting social media account owners offering non-hajj visas for the Hajj, which they considered illegal but still widespread.

“Saudi authorities are intensifying checks on social media accounts offering Hajj visas without having to wait too long. “The Saudi authorities are determined to take non-procedural action against the Hajj pilgrims,” he said.

Law Number 8 of 2019 concerning Hajj and Umrah regulates Indonesia’s Hajj quota and Hajj visas are determined by the Minister of Religion in accordance with an agreement with Saudi Arabia. It is prohibited to perform the Hajj without a valid Hajj visa or any other non-Hajj visit visa.

The Consul General stated that social media accounts offering the Hajj pilgrimage without a Hajj visa were operated by individuals in Indonesia or Saudi Arabia. Apart from travel agencies, several individuals are also known to organize the Hajj pilgrimage through illegal means on social media.

“Our focus is on handling victims (affected by illegal visas) in Saudi Arabia, including the victims involved in this case whose whereabouts we are currently searching for,” said Yusron.
