Jakarta (ANTARA) –

Indonesian National Army (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto said the Australian and Singaporean militaries had expressed their desire to join the UN peacekeeping operation in the Gaza Strip.

He welcomed the call by Australia and Singapore to carry out a joint UN peacekeeping operation in Gaza when speaking to journalists on the sidelines of his meeting with clerics from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Jakarta, Friday.

Cooperation between countries, especially between countries in the Asian region, is very necessary to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza, he said.

However, he did not provide further details regarding the potential for cooperation between the defense forces of Indonesia, Australia and Singapore for peacekeeping missions.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi recently said Indonesia could send its peacekeeping troops to the Gaza Strip, as long as it received permission from a United Nations (UN) mandate.

General Agus revealed that one of the TNI units that will be deployed to the Palestinian territories for the UN mission is the engineering battalion, because its personnel can help rebuild destroyed houses and public facilities, such as schools, hospitals and places of worship.

As previously reported, to anticipate the need for UN peacekeeping troops in Gaza, the TNI has prepared 1,394 personnel for duties such as security, rebuilding public facilities and providing health services.

General Agus also highlighted the TNI’s readiness to send further humanitarian supplies to Gaza, including sending a hospital ship, provided a ceasefire is implemented and the Indonesian military receives a UN mandate to do so.

A new armed conflict erupted between Palestine and Israel following Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel in the early hours of October 7, 2023.

Before the Palestinian liberation fighters’ attack on Israel, Tel Aviv continued to close the Gaza crossing.

In response to the unprecedented surprise attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on Hamas. Since the war began, Israeli armed forces have killed at least 37,266 Palestinian civilians and injured around 85,102 others as of June 15, according to Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera reported that many of those killed in Gaza were women and children. Israel’s aggression has also triggered a humanitarian disaster.
