Southeast Asian Countries Lead in Positive Experiences

Washington–(ANTARA/Business Wire)–The Gallup Global Emotions 2024 report provides a brief overview of Gallup’s latest measurements of people’s daily positive and negative experiences. The findings are based on nearly 146,000 interviews with adults in 142 countries and territories in 2023.

Gallup’s Positive and Negative Experiences Index measures the intangible things in life – feelings and emotions – that traditional economic indicators like GDP never intended to measure.

In 2023, several Southeast Asian countries ranked high in the Positive Experiences Index and low in the Negative Experiences Index. This score shows how widespread positive and negative emotions are in each country.

Southeast Asian Countries Again Lead in Positive Experiences

The 2023 findings reveal that Southeast Asia’s representation in the Positive Experiences Index is very strong, with several countries reporting the highest positive experiences in the world. While Latin American countries, Panama and Paraguay, have the highest score globally at 86, Indonesia ranks behind with an index score of 84, and Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand all recorded scores of 82.

Nine out of 10 adults in Indonesia (90%) said they smiled or laughed a lot the day before the survey. In the Philippines, 75% of adults are studying or doing something interesting, well above the global average of 54%. Vietnam (92%) and Malaysia (90%) lead the world in getting enough rest.

Vietnam Reports Lowest Negative Experiences Globally

The report also explores the prevalence of negative emotions around the world. At the global level, negative emotions decreased for the first time since 2014. Scores ranged from a high of 53 in Guinea to a low of 11 in Vietnam, which appeared at the bottom of the list for the second time.

Countries and regions with the lowest negative scores do not necessarily have the highest positive scores. Some countries in Southeast Asia that rank highly in the Positive Experiences Index do not rank very low in the Negative Experiences Index. Thailand and the Philippines both reported high levels of positive experiences, with index scores of 82, but neither country had low levels of negative experiences, reporting scores of 26 and 35 respectively.

Loneliness Significantly Increases the Likelihood of Experiencing Negative Emotions

Given the enormous threat loneliness and isolation pose to human health and well-being, Gallup recently added loneliness to the list of negative emotions the world is asked about.

Analysis of the relationship between loneliness and other emotions revealed that people who said they felt lonely were much more likely to experience the other five negative emotions than those who did not, and less likely to experience positive emotions. Reported levels of loneliness vary across Southeast Asia, from a high of 33% in the Philippines to a low of 6% in Vietnam.
