Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) voiced support for efforts to increase the involvement of the younger generation, including Generation Z, in various aspects of social forestry, including the development of products resulting from sustainable forest use. In a discussion that took place online from Jakarta on Friday, the Ministry’s Director General of Social Forestry and Environmental Partnerships (PSKL), Mahfudz, invited the younger generation to get involved in social forestry schemes.

The scheme includes community forests, village forests, community plantation forests, customary forests and forestry partnerships.

“There needs to be regeneration of the younger generation, so first the younger generation can play a role in helping develop institutions at the local level,” said Mahfudz.

He explained that cadre formation of forest management groups is necessary considering that social forestry permits are granted for a period of up to 35 years and can be extended to 70 years.

The younger generation, he said, could act as mentors or young entrepreneurs who could create new jobs and bigger businesses.

They can also help with the marketing and development of forest products belonging to the Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS).

He then gave an example of how generation Z can design forestry products that Indonesia’s young generation likes and needs to develop their market.

“I think the younger generation has a role in carrying out innovation and education regarding social forestry products,” he explained.

Based on KLHK data, as of May 2024, the Social Forestry program has achieved land utilization of 7.08 million hectares, consisting of 10,232 approval units and involving 1.3 million heads of families throughout Indonesia.

Moreover, 13,460 KUPS have been formed which currently manage and utilize forests based on forest potential.
