Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) – Former Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa is optimistic that East Java will become the center of the Indonesian economy, considering its enormous maritime, fishery and fishery product potential.

Parawansa, in a statement received here, Tuesday, said that East Java has six ports, namely Tanjung Perak, Teluk Lamong, Tanjung Wangi, Boom Banyuwangi, Kalianget, and Tanjung Tembaga Port in Probolinggo.

“Increasing port capacity and services is very important because it has a very vital role in supporting the smooth distribution of logistics to and from East Java as well as to and from various countries,” he said.

This statement was made by the former Governor regarding National Harbor Day while performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Parawansa believes that East Java as the hub of Eastern Indonesia currently has two main ports that can transport goods and people and support trade activities on a large scale.

Tanjung Perak in Surabaya City and Tanjung Tembaga in Probolinggo show East Java’s readiness to meet the inter-island market and increase economic activity, he stressed.

Indonesia, as a maritime country, is known for having several ships anchored at its docks to support various economic and tourism activities.

The former governor explained that economic activities at Tanjung Perak Port are also supported by Tanjung Tembaga Port.

This offers great potential for East Java as a gateway between the city and the island for maritime economic activities.

“Tanjung Perak has international status, while Tanjung Tembaga has a strategic location as a gateway to inland areas which include Probolinggo, Jember, Pasuruan, Situbondo and Lumajang,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said that Probolinggo Port will become an international port in the future because it has obtained a certificate related to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code).
