Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto stated that the government is working to rebuild the Indonesian Hospital in the Gaza Strip.

“We have discussed it, this is still in the initial stages, so that in the future we can have a new Indonesian Hospital in Gaza,” said the Minister of Finance in Jakarta, Thursday (13/6).

Tjahjanto explained that the Coordinating Ministry had taken several steps, including establishing communication with the humanitarian organization Indonesia Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) regarding the rebuilding of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza.

However, he cannot confirm when the construction will start because it depends on the conflict situation in Gaza.

The Minister of Finance, Monday (10/6), received the Chair of the MER-C Presidium Sarbini Abdul Murad to discuss the reconstruction of the Indonesian Hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Hadi praised the organization’s tenacity in maintaining their humanitarian services in Gaza amidst Israel’s continued and indiscriminate aggression in the region.

He also reiterated the government’s support for the humanitarian assistance provided by MER-C for the Palestinian people.

The humanitarian organization previously criticized Israel for harassing and attacking hospitals along the Gaza Strip, which also impacted the Indonesian Hospital which was built “out of the generosity of the Indonesian people.”

Through their open letter to the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in December 2023, they criticized Israel for exploiting hospitals as military bases during their aggression in Gaza.

They also urged WHO to intervene and advocate for the protection of all hospitals in Gaza from being used for military purposes by Israel.

“We believe that hospitals, especially in times of conflict, must remain safe zones, protected even in times of war, to carry out their noble duties in treating and saving the lives of war victims,” said MER-C in its open letter.
