“They were lied to. They were promised to be placed in a legal place. In some countries it is legal, but in Indonesia online gambling is illegal,”

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Communication and Information has found indications of human trafficking in online gambling cases in Southeast Asia.

This was conveyed by the Director General of Information and Public Communication at the Ministry, Usman Kansong, in a discussion entitled “Death Due to Gambling” in Jakarta, Saturday (15 June).

According to him, many Indonesians work in the gambling business without first knowing about the real job.

“We suspect human trafficking practices in online gambling. “There are Indonesian citizens who are employed in gambling locations, both online and physical,” explained Kansong.

He informed that Indonesian citizens who were victims of human trafficking were employed on online gambling sites abroad.

“They were lied to. They were promised to be placed in a legal place. In some countries it is legal, but in Indonesia online gambling is illegal,” he continued.

He admitted that he found this practice in gambling places in Southeast Asian countries.

Previously, on April 23, he said that the online gambling task force would collaborate with Interpol to handle cross-border cases.

In line with the Human Trafficking Task Force, Kansong stated that the Integrated Task Force for the Eradication of Online Gambling will collaborate with authorities in other countries to deal with online gambling practices as a whole.

“Without a task force, it is difficult for us to coordinate with other countries. By collaborating with other countries, we can carry out comprehensive handling,” he stressed.

Moreover, he said, the effort to involve Interpol was motivated by the discovery of an online gambling server targeting Indonesian people from abroad.

In October 2023, the ministry discovered the servers were located in the Philippines and Cambodia. Therefore, cooperation with Interpol or authorities abroad will enable the government to take legal action against online bookies.

“The Financial Services Authority (OJK) cannot block bank accounts originating from abroad. “By collaborating with authorities in other countries, the handling can be comprehensive,” he said.

Kansong said that the Integrated Task Force for Eradicating Online Gambling would involve various ministries and institutions, including the Ministry of Communication and Information, OJK, the Center for Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis (PPATK), and the National Police.

The task force will work under the coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.
