Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Social Affairs is holding free cataract surgery in Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan, with the aim of alleviating poverty by helping cataract sufferers return to work.

In a press release from the Ministry of Social Affairs in Jakarta, Thursday, Social Minister Tri Rismaharini hopes that with this operation, cataract sufferers can return to work and earn an income after their eyesight recovers.

“If you don’t have income, you have the potential to become poor. “(Handling) this is the responsibility of the Ministry of Social Affairs,” he said.

Therefore, the Ministry is taking anticipatory and preventive steps against blindness by offering free cataract surgery so that people remain healthy and productive, he added.

Rismaharini said that cataract surgery is not a major operation so people do not need to worry about choosing it. Furthermore, the free operations organized by the Ministry are carried out by specialist doctors who are experts in their fields.

He advised patients undergoing surgery not to lift heavy objects, bend over, or wash their faces with water for a while.

This free cataract surgery is part of the South Kalimantan Ministry of Social Affairs program.

Minister Rismaharini said that as many as 320 people took part in free cataract surgery which was held at the H. Abdul Aziz Regional General Hospital (RSUD), Barito Kuala Regency.

All participants went through several stages, including checking sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol and biometric tests, he added.

So far, the Ministry of Social Affairs has provided free cataract operations to 9,110 people in various regions such as East Java, Papua, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara and North Aceh.

At least 724 people underwent free cataract surgery in 2022, more than six thousand people in 2023, and so far this year, 2,374 people have had the operation.
