Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Chair of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat invited the public to implement a healthy lifestyle movement from an early age because improving the health of the younger generation is a strategic step to increase the nation’s competitiveness.

“People’s understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle from an early age must continue to be strengthened, so that awareness of creating a strong and resilient generation continues to grow,” said Moerdijat in a statement received in Jakarta, Sunday.

He said that data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey shows that the average new smoker starts smoking at school age or 10-19 years.

He said that data from the Ministry of Health shows that the prevalence of smokers aged 10-18 years has decreased to 7.4 percent.

However, this figure is still high compared to the target for reducing the prevalence of new smokers in the 2024-2029 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN), namely 5.4 percent.

Meanwhile, the prevalence rate for new smokers a decade ago was 7.2 percent.

Moerdijat said, in responding to the high prevalence rate, concrete steps need to be taken so that the reduction target that has been set can be realized.

He explained that good healthy living habits must start from the family environment.

Therefore, he hopes that parents can educate their children about healthy living, and that eventually it will become part of everyday life.

“The support of all parties is needed so that the encouragement to live a healthy lifestyle can take place on a massive scale,” he said.

He added that good examples from stakeholders and community leaders are very necessary in building awareness of healthy living.

He also reminded stakeholders to accelerate development plans related to public health to create healthy citizens.
