Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian National Army (TNI) provides health services to residents of Bilogai Village in Sugapa, Intan Jaya District, Central Papua, to help those who need medical assistance in an effort to build relationships with them.

This community service was carried out by officers from the TNI Raider Yonif 509/Balawara Yudha Task Force which operates under the command of the Habema Operational Command in the middle of its patrol mission on the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border, according to a press statement, Sunday.

“Patrol activities and mobile health services in Bilogai (Village), Sugapa District, are a form of TNI concern for the community through providing basic services to accelerate Papua’s development,” said TNI Habema Operations Commander Brigadier General TNI Lucky Avianto.

He explained that in this community service, the Infantry Battalion Post J2 medical team led by First Lieutenant Commander Muh Fardhana visited residents’ homes and provided health services for residents.

The medical team carries out general examinations and treatment of minor illnesses, distributes vitamins, and promotes clean and healthy lifestyles to residents.

The military officers carrying out the mission were welcomed by the residents of Bilogai Village. Such interactions would encourage harmonious relations between the Indonesian military and the local population, he said.

Avianto explained that this medical mission for Bilogai residents was carried out in accordance with Presidential Instruction Number 9 of 2020 concerning the Acceleration of Welfare Development in Papua and in line with the soft-power strategy prepared by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto in overcoming Papua’s problems.

Over the past few years, Papuan armed groups have repeatedly used hit-and-run tactics against Indonesian security forces and carried out acts of terror against civilians in the Intan Jaya, Nduga and Puncak districts.

In response, the military and police established the Habema Operational Command earlier this year to optimize joint security operations in Papua to prevent local conflict and neutralize the threat of armed Papuan rebels.
