Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman believes there is no problem with the plans of state-owned logistics company Bulog, which recently secured Indonesian rice stocks by acquiring a rice company in Cambodia.

“There is no problem with Bulog’s plan,” he said. “The most important thing now is to optimize the potential we have to stimulate the domestic economy.”

Sulaiman emphasized that this acquisition must be carried out in conjunction with domestic efforts to maximize domestic food sources. These efforts include creating new rice fields, optimizing existing rice fields, and improving the irrigation system.

He said that the acquisition must be carried out in conjunction with domestic efforts to maximize domestic food resources. These efforts include creating new rice fields, optimizing existing rice fields, and improving the irrigation system.

“Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in rice without imports,” he added. “Even with current imports, the figure should not exceed 10 percent.”

Sulaiman highlighted the distribution of water pumps throughout the province as an effort to mitigate the potential decline in food reserves due to the predicted drought in July to October.

“Dispatching water pumps is our short-term solution… This is the most appropriate step to mitigate the impact of the current drought and El Nino,” he said.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan previously confirmed that Bulog would acquire several rice sources from Cambodia to secure domestic rice stocks. He revealed that this action was directly ordered by President Joko Widodo.

On June 12, Bulog Main Director Bayu Krisnamurthi said that his party was ready to follow up on the government’s instructions to explore potential collaboration with other parties, especially with Cambodia, in the fields of the economy and food investment.

He added that Bulog has collaborated with Cambodia through business-to-business and government-to-government schemes in 2023 and early 2024.
