Universities urged to help students get jobs abroad

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Head of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) Benny Rhamdani asked universities to equip students with the skills needed to achieve job opportunities abroad. “So that people do not only think about working domestically, but also achieve job opportunities abroad that are very open,” said Rhamdani after giving a public lecture at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, South Tangerang, Banten Province, Wednesday.

On that occasion, he also provided information regarding the protection of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).

He emphasized that universities need to work hard to prepare quality human resources (HR).

Universities should help students learn the skills and competencies required by host countries through linkages and matching with industry, he added.

He emphasized that there are many job opportunities that can be worked on by the Indonesian people and they need to be encouraged to work on them.

However, to get these jobs, Indonesian workers must compete with other countries that want to place their citizens abroad, said Rhamdani.

“(It is necessary) to prepare them to have language skills, competence, and expertise in the job sector they choose,” he added.

For this reason, he said, BP2MI continues to encourage matching the skills taught in higher education with the skills needed by service users through the link and match route.

On Wednesday, BP2MI also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UIN Syarif Hidayatullah.

Rhamdani hopes that this agreement will make a significant contribution in terms of preparing human resources at the university level.

In particular, he highlighted the huge job opportunities in the health sector for Indonesian students. He hopes they graduate with skills needed by host countries, including the Middle East and Europe.
