Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Paiman Raharjo stated that village funds have succeeded in increasing the number of independent villages in the country, which currently reaches 11,456 villages.

Raharjo made this statement in his ministry’s press release, Saturday, at a seminar entitled “Road Map for Village Development Based on Demographic Dividends for the Vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045” at the KAHMI Center, Jakarta, Friday.

“The output of village development is to increase village independence and eliminate backwardness,” he said.

He said that village development is one of President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) Nawacita or nine goals, which includes prioritizing the acceleration of infrastructure development that connects peripheral areas with growth centers.

Therefore, village development includes planning, implementation and monitoring stages, to improve the welfare of village communities and quality of life, as well as poverty alleviation.

Since 2015, the government has disbursed village funds reaching 538.9 trillion rupiah (around 32.68 billion US dollars).

In contrast to independent villages, Raharjo stated that the number of underdeveloped and very underdeveloped villages had decreased from 23 thousand to 12 thousand.

On that occasion, the Deputy Minister of Transportation also highlighted several strategic steps that need to be taken in villages, the first of which is strengthening village economic institutions through village-owned enterprises as the main driver of the village economy.

The second focus is infrastructure, utilizing appropriate technology and increasing infrastructure network connectivity between villages and between villages and cities.

The third step needed is to strengthen the capacity of village government officials to improve the quality of village government as a self-governing community.

The fourth priority is optimizing the use of village funds to encourage the fulfillment of basic services and village empowerment in accordance with the priority provisions for the use of village funds.

The fifth step consists of strengthening environmentally based village space utilization strategies for sustainable livelihoods, while the sixth approach includes improving education in the management and preservation of local culture and cultural heritage.

“Furthermore, (need to focus on) development synergy, (carrying out) asymmetric policies, (carrying out) urbanization, and (carrying out) rural development,” he said.
