This land is an asset of the West Sumatra government which will be handed over to residents affected by floods and flash floods in Tanah Datar.

Batusangkar, West Sumatra (ANTARA) – West Sumatra has prepared 3.8 hectares of land to relocate residents of Tanah Datar Regency whose houses were badly damaged by flooding or are in the red zone of the cold lava flow of Mount Marapi.

“This land is an asset of the West Sumatra Government which will be handed over to residents affected by floods and flash floods in Tanah Datar,” said West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi in Jakarta, Tuesday.

He made this statement after reviewing the conditions of the relocation location in Rangkat Village, Rangkat District, Tanah Datar Regency.

According to him, the 3.8 hectare land was previously used by the Center for Plantation Seeds (BBI) to plant secondary crops and is currently being used by the West Sumatra Horticulture and Plantation Food Crops Service.

“The area of BBI is around 20 hectares. “Of this area, we will use 3.8 hectares as a relocation site for disaster victims who do not have their own land to build houses,” he said.

He said, based on the latest data, there were 58 families affected by the disaster who would be relocated to the area.

“Supporting facilities will also be prepared for them, such as places of worship and other facilities,” he added.

According to Mahyeldi, once the land for relocation is available, the construction of houses and facilities will fall under the authority of the central government.

“In principle, the land is ready and we will immediately coordinate with the central government to build houses for residents affected by this disaster,” he said.

Floods and flash floods have repeatedly hit several areas in Tanah Datar since December 2023.

The worst occurred on May 11, 2024, which resulted in many casualties and damage to infrastructure, including residents’ houses.
