Jakarta (ANTARA) – On the occasion of World Food Safety Day, the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) urges all Indonesian people to pay more attention to food hygiene in order to achieve food safety.

Food hygiene has a multiplier effect throughout the world, said Rizka Andalucia, Acting Head of BPOM, in her speech which continued online on Friday.

“Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 600 million people, or one in 10 people, fall ill, and 420,000 people die every year from consuming unsafe food contaminated with biological, bacterial or other compounds,” he said. highlighted.

WHO also estimates that more than US$110 billion is lost annually in productivity and medical costs, with children under the age of five bearing 40 percent of the burden of food-borne diseases.

WHO further said that children under the age of five bear 40 percent of the burden of food-borne diseases, he said.

In Asia-Pacific, rapid urbanization, population growth, the emergence of new technologies in food management, and changing environmental conditions have triggered new threats to food security.

Food contaminated with bacteria can also affect a country’s reputation, which can impact other sectors such as tourism, which contributes to national income, Andalucia said.

Therefore, if not anticipated and controlled, these problems will hamper social and economic development, he said.

World Food Safety Day 2024 carries the theme “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected” to remind the world of the importance of preparedness when facing food safety incidents, no matter how minor or severe.

Separately, Chair of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) Piprim Basarah Yanuarso said food safety is an important factor that must be considered in meeting children’s nutritional needs.

“Don’t let our children be given food contaminated with germs or bacteria,” he appealed.
