Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono appealed to the Indonesian people to maintain the cleanliness and health of their country’s seas when all countries in the world celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday.

“Make the sea our front yard. Don’t throw plastic and all kinds of rubbish into the sea. “We all have to ensure our seas are clean because they provide life for humans,” he stressed.

In connection with the celebration of World Oceans Day, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries plans to carry out beach clean-up actions simultaneously in 23 districts and cities throughout Indonesia.

This beach clean program is part of the Ministry’s efforts to support Indonesian marine conservation and the sustainability of fisheries resources.

Despite the importance of clean and healthy seas for human life, Trenggono said that there are still many people in the country who are not aware of it.

In fact, Indonesian people live in a maritime country. Therefore, the sea should be treated as their front yard, he said.

“As the front page, the sea must be kept clean,” he said, reminding that sustainable fishing must also be implemented consistently.

Coinciding with World Oceans Day which is celebrated globally on June 8 every year, the theme of this year’s action is “Catalysts for Action for Our Oceans & Climate”.

The official World Oceans Day website accessed by ANTARA, Saturday, revealed that the theme of the action was chosen to encourage stakeholders to collaborate to create a healthy blue planet and a more just, equal and sustainable society.

To achieve the objectives of this chosen action theme, World Oceans Day activists call on the government and all relevant stakeholders, including legislators and corporate leaders, to encourage several efforts.

Maximizing all existing climate solutions, accelerating a just transition to clean and renewable energy, and stopping the extraction of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, are some of the initiatives that should be encouraged.

In addition, World Oceans Day activists are calling for the phasing out of single-use plastics, cooperation with local authorities tasked with taking action to bring about change in their communities, and the preservation and restoration of natural coastal and marine ecosystems. as land by designating highly protected areas that will cover at least 30 percent of land and water by 2030.
